The Confusions for Brides in Wedding Photography

The Confusions for Brides in Wedding Photography
In many cases my heart goes out to the brides tht I meet and I suppose the ones I don’t meet. Brides today have got so much to do, so much or organize, so many details. Their wedding is such a large and important event that they work tirelessly to ensure they tie up all the loose ends.
When it comes to their dream wedding photography many brides have a clear idea of what they like and don’t like but there is a certain issue that, through no fault of their own, is very important. On a regular basis I meet brides from all over the world and the same assumption arrises. Brides see on many websites and wedding magazines some wonderfull and dreamy images shot to perfection of weddings and special moments. The sad reallity for them is that nearly all of these glam wedding photos are staged. When I was working in United States and Canada it was even more predominent than here in South America. Most weddings in Chile pencil in a max of 45 Mins for the formal wedding shoot into the chronology of the day, while this is a good amount of time to shoot the couple it limits location changes and can also have limitations based on the time of the photo shoot in reference to the available sun light.
Realisticlly for brides to receive full scale staged glamour wedding photos the couple have to secure 2-3 hours for a photo session and on the day this is nearly impossible. Most of the high fashion and or glamour wedding photography takes place a fe days after the wedding or upon return from the honeymoon where the couple get the same outfits on as the big day, redo the hair and makeup and then devote the best part of a day to travel to perfectly it and composed location to create flawless images. On the big day of the wedding the emotion is always more powerfull than any location, any color or any dress.
While over the years I have becme very adapt at shooting real time formal and informal portraiture wedding photographs live at the event, sometimes with only a 20 min window of light…consider always…if you cant make the time on the big day….theres always a chance to re stage and create again later. Consider making a date after the wedding to do some highly artistic creative wedding photos for your album and also considr a TTD Trash the Dress session, a somewhat wild concept of taking some shots that don’t respect the wedding dress but no harm comes to it….its all cleaned and aybe the odd thread hear and there but nothing major. TTD sessions create some of the most fun images you could dream of having.

Give it some thought …………………….

Some other images now on Flickr

From time to time, when I have the time I try to pop a few wedding photographs on the http://www.weddingphotochile.com/ Flickr account ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/gardnerhamilton/ )
I keep these images to a smaller size and lower resolution, 1 to stop the theifs on FLICKR stealing them and using them, bat also to make your computer handle them a little easier. As most of the wedding photographs produced by me are 21.1 mega pixel it makes for some pretty heavy images for your computer to handle.

Over the last 6 or 7 weddings the gang here have visited some really great locations both for local people and mainly for destination weddings, brides and grooms from England, Sweden, Switzerland< United States (USA) and Canada...oh yeah...and Pucon for the Australians..all in all I and we are very lucky having had a great run of fantastic clients and fantastic locations.

Over the winter i will be creating some new sets in FLICKR to highlight the weddings covered out of Chile and another set showing the coverage as the same sex wedding photographers at locations in USA and UK in the coming year as well as several from USA over the past 5 years. (upon approval from the clients)

so...what you waiting for...go have a peek through flicker and leave me some comments on your favorite fotos

New Yorkers, Vina Matetic, Casablanca, Chile on 14th Feb 2010

About 4 months ago I first met with Pamela and Jason from Manhatten , Pam is a Vice President with a major USA Bank and Jason a Lawyer. The couple travelled south to Santiago to begin their destination wedding plans and we met in the lobby of the family condo in Providencia to begin discussing the wedding photography plan.
I arrived a little early as usual and a little flustered as this was my 3rd meeting of the day after having a photoshoot in the morning for Spoon Publishing in Sweden, one of my regular commercial clients.
Pam and Jason had been very busy but we soon got to business and got a fell for how we could work together. Jason was a little concerned about the formality of the photography but I managed to assure him that I could keep it low key and relaxed to make him feel comfortable on the big day.
After many communications via email and a couple of phone calls chile to NYC we got all the plan laid out and ready to shoot, in the interim period I visited the location Vina Matetic in Casablanca twice to see how the flowers and tree cover was changing to ensure we picked the right locations to shoot on the day

A final meet for coffee and cake in Vina del Mar a few days before the wedding and we were all set to go. The New York gang arrived on time even although Pamelas worries of weather delays were a reality, they did not come into play.

The fantastic setting was a dream to work at, Jason and Pamela had reserved several of the rooms, all of which named after different wines, in which we started with the preperation wedding photography for the bride. Duering this time is the photographers chance to steal the dress and shoes to shoot the details and location shots.

The 6pm ceremony ran on time but did not leave a lot of time for the photography remit the clients required there after…novios foto session, family groups and a total group shot of 160 invites. Just before the event started the bride and groom thought they would like to try to shoot a few frames at the BODEGA, quickly we jumped in the truck and flew the 4 km to the bodega to tag a few places that we could take some artistic photographs to include in their wedding album…putting rocks to mark the exact places to shoot so that it woud save time…the extra 20 mins of driving was valuable light time needed upon the return to catch the group shots.

So with the formals, informals, groups and details all captured it was onto the meal and party. The meal was served in the octagonal resturant surrounded by a little lagoon. The clarity of the night sky was amazing.

Pamelas Uncle Pedro Missone , a famous Chilean singer songwriter, was a guest and wrote and sang two songs esspecially for them on their speacial day…a great opportunity and a nice personal touch..

To show the guests some Chilean traditional dance there was more of a show........

The party hit off soon after and the New York crowd partied hard with the local Chileans…

The call for the 1st of 2 busses to return guests to vina del mar went out at 10 mins to 1am….everyone was having such a blast that only 9 people got on so needless to say the last bus was a little busy..
This was a very well put together event…the Bride and Groom really put their hearts into this day both in preperation and emmosional content throughout the event, some very touching moments. Every wedding is Unique, this one was one of the most sincere celebrations of the couples sepecial day I have encountered in my career. An awesome day !

Jason watches the guests enter the dinning area as pams girls make some adjustments

Mauricio stages the couple on a cute little bridge to catch a last shot before they enter for the meal and leave daylight behind

12th Feb Wedding Vina del mar

The day started at 1pm for Weding PhotoChile Team at the hair salon in Vina del Mar centre where we caught up with Daniela starting with her wedding day preperation. Let the Photography begin !!!

Next up was the Make up. This was faster than usual and since the salon was so very hot we were happy about this.

Arriving at the event centre the first order of things was to ensure the hair was still intact then add the finnishing touches to the make up...I particularly like this shot

As always we are looking for the chance to steal the dress and shoes for the detail photos...within the grounds of club Salinas in Vina del mar are some old buildings wth old windows and doors. I loved the deep red of this door and thought it would create a nice contrast for the dress..

To remind them of the exact location where the ceremony took place and the natural element of the park grounds, theres nothing more natural than a tree to assist in the modeling of her unique bridal shoes

All during the ceremony Jose and Daniela held hands...the start of things to come..

After the ceremony the two could relax and have fun creating some candid informal photos that they will cherish for a lifetime

Next stop is back to the event centre for one of the most spectacular meals and desert buffets i've ever seen in Chile...

then is on with the music an the colored lights to party hard until 4am.

Yet another great event and a great bunch of people...this event ran like a swiss watch andthe guests were great for timekeeping and complying with the chronology of the day...a pleasure indeed..

Same Sex !!, Different Location !!

Same Sex ! Different Location !

It has been just under 5 years since I last worked at a same sex wedding but, I can’t wait as it brings some different challenges. As a wedding photographer it is my job to capture images of love and moments reflecting split second glances , actions and reactions to report the event in its entirity.

Andrew and Tim contacted me through another same sex couple that I covered their wedding in Los Angeles about 5 yeas ago. They are all friends and they loved the photographs I produced back then. Andy and Tim are a very laid back pair, both succesfull professionals they know what they want and are very clear about it. I love it when a couple have a very clear understanding of what they are looking for as it gives me a directive and a goal to hit and go beyond to satisfy the client.

Andy and Tims marrage will take place in a wonderfull event centre overlooking The Bay Area then after the ceromony and meal its back to their wonderfull hilltop house with spectacular views and a roof terrace for The Party. With over 120 guests at the house I think It will be a blast to be there and to get some really cool photo journalistic style photographs.

It is so nice to deal with these guys as they are so organized, right down to the smallest detail. The more info I have about each of them and the event itself, the better informed I am to report the event and the people involved. I could not believe that just 1 day after receiving their deposit, I received the tickets for myself and Mauricio (Assistant Photographer) for our flights in July.

Our second Same sex shoot this year (so far) will be in London in October, Not so warm but great for the autumn images the clients are looking for. Using the wonderfull park locations in central london this is a wedding photographers dream shoot. Liane and Stephanie have been a couple now for 8 years and decided its time to tie the knot. The remote church 26km south of London will be the stage for a quiet informal service, then back to central for the formal wedding photography in the park. Using the fall colours and the great open scapes of the park can create some of the most beautiful and natural images for weddings. Both Liane and stephanie are very much nature lovers and expressed this theme as a preference in their special day.

One shot I can’t wait to capture is there little dog “woody” who will be bringing the rings into the church on a specially made cushion which fits to his back…kinda unique !.

So….this is our Same Sex, Different Location….as opposed to same sex different position !!!

As a destination wedding photographer covering same sex marrages there are some slightly differentapproaches required to enable things to run similar to other weddings. Depending on the clients photographic needs it is my job as the photographer to establish for example, who…if anyone leads in the dance. To create the perfect photos it is important to pose the couple in appropriate positions depending on there status/role within the relationship to assist in appropriate role deffinition within the images.

This can be a tendor subject and sometimes needs to be approached with discretion, and in other cases, some same sex couple make it very clear to me…either way…its all part of the differences that same sex wedding photography brings.
