Chilean Wedding, Indian Dress, Japanese Tsunami

Franchesca and Felipe, both of Vina del mar, Chile went into many long details when planning their special day with nearly 400 people attending it was a full church and the event salon at Salina Pergola in Vina del Mar was buzzing with activity.  Our day started out at the parents of Fran for the bridal prepation and the beautifull Indian inspired dress from Frans 1 year stay in India falling in love with many aspects of their culutre. While preperation was taking place the TV announced that the ecent earthquake in Japan was resulting in a Tsunami alert for Chile. With te Salinas event centre being right on the coast this caused many concerns as to how the day would play out. My heart was aching for fran as this was so dstracting from the days events for her, and probibly many other brides on pacific coastal positions.

Anyhoo, ready she got and of to the church we went then to the event centre where, at 12:30 it was announce we had to clear the premises as the building had to be closed and evacuated.  With dinner only just finnished we had basically 15 mins throw the bouqette, throw the garter, cut the cake, eat the dessert buffet and dance.

After arriving at the church with this threat pending over us for a cancellationof the party I decided to offer the couple not to use time now to take portraits but to do this on another day, on my time, at no additional cost. I felt so bad for them. This way they got to spend as much time as possible with guests on the actual day. 1 week later we met  in concon and did their portraits.

Everything ended up well, .....well.....we nearly all got washed away at one point by 3 HUGE waves coming much further up the rocks than the other waves but Felipe being a surfer read it well and dragged us out of the shoot position with about 4 seconds to spare   YIKES!!!! , Thanks Sir !   here is a sneek peek of the day.

Ten Top Tips for Brides in Chile

As with every passing wedding photography season, here in Chile highlighted a few more recurring factors that I feel effect the way in which I must approach the days photography, so, not to get everyone to conform with what the photographer wants this is more of a few pointers to consider that will not only make the photography better for me, but will ultimately make the resulting photographs better for you .
Everything below are details that with a little advance timing, any bride or groom can ensure do or don't occur on their special day.

1. Daylight !
Being in such a sun drenched part of the world is truly a gift and it is wise to consider this when planning the TIME of your ceremony. Consider that the midday sun here in South America with fry your guests and have your makeup dripping onto your shoes within minutes. Consider that your Church ceremony may be indoors and in the shade but after the church is the prime time for creating the formal portraits of the new couple and in this very strong overhead sunlight you are not maximizing on what nature has to offer. Civil outdoor ceremonies also, while outdoor and in shade are very nice, but if you are in the shade and all around is on fire your eyes will be half closed through the entire event.

So...What then?...the answer is time your ceremony to finish leaving about 90-120 minutes of daylight. This gives time to get to a secluded location near by (previously scouted by me of course) and gives enough time to shoot without rushing. the light in the last 90mins of the days sun creates the most complimentary lighting. The saddest thing I see in wedding photography in Chile is the beautiful brides wonderful white dress and the strong light will not permit the camera from capturing the little details that make the dress so special and unique.

2. Event Punctuality !
Like most things in Chile even weddings can run a little late, which is all fine and half expected. The ultimate price to pay for a late arrival at the church or civil wedding ceremony is that you have then caused a reduction in the amount of time after the ceremony to shoot in natural light. Many times brides and groom will say to me during preparation that "hey ifs were 20 minutes late everyone will wait" Yes I reply, everyone except the SUN !

3. Photos, Video or Both !
Something I think every couple should consider for after their wedding day is, what will be the most treasured memory?, what will be the most important thing after the wedding?  Photos or Video. This is information I feel it is important to inform the photographers and video people about to ensure the photographers and Videographers ensure the one deemed preferential has priority to capture the moment. I have no problem stepping to the side to allow the video crew the prime shot if the bride and groom say it is so. All good professional Photographers and Videographers will conform to this methodology. If they don't look elsewhere.

4. Plastic Bags !
The throwing of the flower petals as the bride and groom leave the church is a great moment , full of fun,
smiles emotions, color laughter and PLASTIC BAGS !!  WHAT? Yes ! Many brides plan so many amazing a beautiful details into their wedding day then the guests show up throwing the petals from Jumbo, Lider, Easy, Cruz Verde etc etc bags Something that no one notices on the day, but believe me the camera never lies. I have Photoshopped every major chain and department store name in Chile from the bags in the hands of  guests throughout 2009. I don't thing Brides can cover every angle but at the few weddings where I have seen the guests with little baskets it makes a huge difference to the final images and such an important moment.

5. The Cake !
This one is very simple. Usually the bride and groom don't actually select the location where there cake will be placed. If this were the case I am sure I would not be making this No5 Post "The Cake"
This one is super simple and makes a HUGE difference to another super important photo of the day.
I'm many cases the cake is delivered to the event centre and constructed on site by either the cake company or the event centre people. Either way the event centre seem to be the one responsible for the position within the room that the cake is placed. Usually they repeat the same location for every event but this is not to say its the BEST location. Against a brick wall or a big reflective window with fingerprints all over it, next to a steel lighting rig for the DJ or beside the drainage pipe or cables coming from the upper floor.

My advice is get the cake positioned somewhere NICE, insist or, get them to put a nice curtain or dark material behind it. this makes the cake color and the color of the brides dress really pop and eliminates other distractions in the background of this prim importance photo of the day

6. First Dance
During the First Dance (and the cake cut for that matter) Tell your Lighting people No Colored Spot Lights on the Bride and Groom. Sometimes the best photos can be ruined because the bride has a half blue and half green face while the groom has a big red spot on the ass of his pants. This is a common reason for many first dance photos ending up in Back and White. not through artistic photography composition but from the need to supply the photo regardless

7. Chronology
When planning the timeline of your day most people make the mistake of planning it then telling all the service providers after the fact. Sure this worked as any good wedding service provider in Chile should flex to suit your needs, BUT, taking the time to meet each of your service providers with your chronology sheet will enable you to consider all the angles. Such is the way with my service, I really have to pencil in the timeline to cover preparation, informal, formal, portraiture, artistic, photojournalistic, and details photos.
Ensuring the right time to photograph the bride and groom, and the group photos is paramount as alcohol begins to play a factor on skin color and organisation issues. A list of the groups you wish to have photographed is the perfect way to go as i can produce it in a very fun and organised fashion  In short...the better the plan we have, the better the results and you have more time to dance and eat cake !

8. The Rings
Here's a little thing that many photographers never seem to mention to their clients and its such an important little detail.. Very simple. Dues to the nature of left and right facing each other become opposites, during the ring exchange it becomes tricky to gt the perfect angles to capture the hands crossing over and exchanging the BLING so,i always tell the couples that when placing the ring on your partners finger, hold the ring between your thumb and forefinger only and slide the ring onto the others finger from below their hand (ie: your hand passes below the others), this giving a clear view from headlight of the event taking place. Works like a charm !

9. Water and Sitting
Bride and Groom, you will be on your feet most of the day and into the night. During your preparation before going to the ceremony, this is when you get most nervous, pulse and heart rates flutter and you are highly likely to become unknowing to you, dehydrated. always have water with you..drink often but not lots or you will need to pee during the ceremony, then you will get all in a fluster. Sipping water throughout the preparation will not only keep you hydrated, it will clear your eyes and help show a clearer shite and more pure eye color in the photographs, it will also keep your body temperature more regulated so you wont sweat, most important for brides makeup and finally it keeps a nice colour in the skin making photos even better. Last but not least it should stop your fainting at the alter !!
Now to sitting down....i always see brides and groom pacing the floor while on the photo during preparation...or walking around the room, or just standing between the endless number of unused comfortable chairs and couches around. TAKE A SEAT...you're going to be on your feet for at least 8 hours..if you don't have to be standing. DON'T  !!!   take it from me as I am on my feet even when your sitting !!

10. Smoke Machines and Laser Lights
Don't you love a touch of the old smoke machine when the party starts?....The laser lights start cutting through it like something from a Sci-Fi movie. Sure its great but warn your Light people, or DJ that focusing cameras on moving people with smoke and laser lights is almost impossible and there can be a high percentage of images ruined as the light and smoke confuse the cameras sensors. If both are kept to a Short burst now and again it creates amazing photos but too much and the photographer has to wait 15 minutes for the smoke to clear possibly missing great photo opportunities on the dance floor.

Hope you picked up a few ideas to help you and your photographer get the best from your special day  GOOD LUCK

Just Add Alcohol !!

Over the last 2 years continuing as a die hard wedding photographer in Chile I have become aware of a very funny part of the Chilean culture, which I think is kinda cute.

During the wedding photography of the day people are not very responsive to the camera and sometimes need a little prodding to get my required result. While everyone is derssed up , make up, hair, nails, all looking great the missing element is often a little smile. At the formal part of the day many people seem to be sooooo serious and reserve expressing their feelings. Even when theyknow there in frame and about to be shot, they will hold a poker face that could bluff easly with the worst of hands in a real game.

Just add alcohol  !!!
Now, during the cocktail things begin to loosen up and as I pull guests to produce the formal family group shots the mood lightens and the smiles start to appear, but usually just on the ladies at this stage. The men remain ties tight and serious. Asking for any fun group shots at this stage in a wedding in Chile usually does not produce the desired effect.

Add more alcohol !!!!!
The meal begins and as the wine starts to settle with the cocktail champagne the knots in the ties begin to slip and everyone starts to asume their natural smile. This is usually the best time to capture the candid photojournalistic shots of emmotions and people interacting, great chances for photographs of eye contact, laughing, touching etc etc

OK Lets just finnish all the alcohol  !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The party begins and like any good wedding the guests start to party hard, although in Chile iI find they party probably the hardest out of all the countries I've worked in. I love the wedding partys in Chile....truely a fiesta...and the dancing is awesome.  Now ...upto this point ..all but 4 weddings in Chile have produced one or two people who constantly approach me throughout the night requesting a foto. It doesn't bother me...It is my job to capture the guests doing what they do so well but I have to consider that the bride and groom most likely do not want 100+ fotos of the same person getting more and more drunk. As much as it is a very fun part of my work watching 200 people getting hammered and having a free hand to photograph them doing all sorts of crazy stuff.. As much as I love this, the artistic portraits are still my favorite.

My assistant Photographer Maurico is a party animal and he just cant get enough of the wedding fiestas. He also has his fare share of Mr and Mrs FOTO FOTO FOTO requesters and produces some perfectly timed images catching them...lets just say not always at their best, but the party is about us reporting all the fun to the clients..so be it.  So, to continue, the FOTO FOTO FOTO cries go out around my ears as I patrol the dance floor. After taking at least 60 requested images of a certain guest I asked Mauricio to step in and track her for a bit. The booze was kicking in and it was about to funny (funnier)

Approximately 3 minutes later I see Mauricio cutting a path right to me with a huge smile on his face and his camera preview screen lit with an image...I thought "he's got one already?"  surely not !!  sure enough...only a matter of time and percentages.  Oh dear...The front of the dress fell down !!

(While I hold the full Copyright and Publication rights on this image It will not be published to protect the ID of the subject)

After we gave the guest a preview of this she laughed and kept insisting on more fotos...she was awesome  just too funny.
In summary..Chile weddings ROCK !...and the guests are always awesome...Just add Alcohol !! (lol)

Entering into the season

So 25th October and the wedding photo season has kicked into full swing. Wedding photographers all over CHile and no dobt the southern hemisphere are now recharging batteries friday and saturday nights until the end of May 2010.

I have finally take charge of someting I was never happy with in supplying wedding photography sevices in Santiago and in Vina del mar. Offering Clients wedding packages for their photographs. It seems so standard and boring. To me, a wedding is so unique and needs a unique approach and a unique construction to the format of the days photography. People are all so different and like different things, to try to provide a package to report such an event is really a comprimise on the part of the bride and groom.

So as of today I will take the details of each event based on what the client needs and wants, not what they can get for their buck. Through customising my wedding photography delivery I am convinced that the type of client I serve will have a greater satisfaction and also allowing me to work outwith the constraints of a package. Weddings require huge amounts of flexibility and adaptabillity on the behalf of the photographers. Packages are a ball and chain for all. Contact me for a sample price on your event. Below on this blog you can see a listing for free quote where you can fill out all your information to recieve a free quote on your wedding photography for events in Chile. for weddings in other countries please contact me directly through www.weddingphotochile.com

Locations for Weddings in Chile

Hi there,
So your thinking about getting married in Chile ??...well theres a few locations and companies Ive worked with lately and they really impressed me. I will list them at the bottom of this post.
If you already live in Chile then sourcing good locations is easy as you have the means to go and physically see the place to check it out. As a fotografo de matrimonios (wedding photographer) in Chile I also feel obliged to do the same and actively have been. For me it is very important to know the location before the event, know the hot spots and the pitfalls of each location to ensure I bring the best equipment to cover the shoot for the client and also to pre visualise how and what I will use on the location to create the images, ie backdrops, gardens, lighting, reflect, shadows, stairs, architecture etc etc.
It still saddens me that so many chileans have all these wonderfull scenic locations for weddings and choose to perform the ceremony so lte in the day missing out on so much good lighting...with summer coming soon that will change but the last 11 weddings I have covered have been after 7pm in winter...flash flash and more artificial light...if you have the choice brides to be...change the time to suit the sun!!!
So, where do I like to shoot and why.......well as you have probibly gathered by now, any location has its good points but for me...its all about daylight to make you look amazing... If I had to state some preferences for locatios in the Vina del mar city area then it would be

Castle Ross (Vina del mar)
Hotel Radisson (concon)
Sheraton Hotel (Vina del mar)

These three locations have amazing ocean views which also contain some landscape in the backgrounds creating great backdrops for sunset photography. Castle Ross also has the element of architecture within the building and some nice features in its gardens.
If you are looking for a very regal backdrop of a wonderfull old white stone building with mosaic tile floors and stairs and also beautiful gardenrs then, the fine art center in "Quinta Vergara" in Vina del mar has amazing architecture for wedding backdrops and can be availlible for wedding photography with a simple permission from the municipalidad de vina del mar. You can see some sample portraits (retratos) at this location in the Galleria at www.gardnerhamilton.com , select Portraits/Retratos. These images were taken from 2pm to 5pm and the lighting changes can be noticed.

OK Other locations I feel are special...other than the listed above you should look at "Sporting Club Valparaiso" it is actually in Vina del mar about 5 mins drive from centre of town. This old race track has a beautifull old building attached to it with several event rooms all very regal with magestic views and oak panelled walls floor to ceiling. i was photographing a wedding there a couple of weeago and was very happy with the results as the elegance of the bulding amplified the elegance of the event.

Prefer the countryside.....I have one thing to say http://www.indomita.cl/

This is without a doubt in my mind...Thee place to get hitched! the vew, the look, the service...oye oye oye...Located 45mins drive from Santgo and about the same from Vina del mar it is the greatest location no matter where you event. As you can see on their website the location is second to none, both for your event and for the purposes of wedding phontography. The sunset in the valley, the low light beaming down through the rows of vine rees, the mountains, the clean fresh air, the bloody amazing vino...beautiful....romantic...its everything a wedding photographer dreams of.

Event Planners in Chile.....well...its different from say USA for example but hey, their trying!!!...but seriously I ve woed on several occations with a company called CASA EVENTOS ( house of events is the nearest translation) www.casaeventos.cl These guys blew me away, after working in other countries over the years and seeing a lot of styles...these guys I consider to be the masters of their craft in Chile..there food is just down right great and with great presentaation and originality. The visual presentation is beautiful but most of all what stood outo me is something not much found down here at the end of the earth, attention to detail...these guys nail it wonderfully, and to me again this is important as photographs and more so wedding photography is all about details.

so in short here is my list for the Vina del mar area..I will post the same for Santigo soon although....Vina is way more picturesque to begin.

Location (City)
Castle Ross, Vina del mar
Hotel Radisson, Concon
Sheraton Hotel, Vina del mar

Location (out of town)
http://www.indomita.cl/ (I'm not giving you a choice here as I want the best for you lol)

Event Production

Contact me if you would like info on other location and even from other cities in Chile and I will try to help you...thanks

FREE COUPLES PORTRAITS

This week I have decided to start the free monthly portraits for couples who are getting married. How does it work? ok...all the clients who book with me each month...their names are put into a monthly draw and one couple wins the chance to do a free photosession for couples portraits consisting of around 3 hours of phototime from which they will recieve a CD containing minimum 10 images all full size files, without copyright and ready to print and send. The final images will be fully edited in Photoshop and of full pro quality.

Pro or Hobby Photographer....whats the difference?

I remember when I first started out in photography, what seems like 2 lifetimes ago..and I remember asking a seasoned Pro " what's the difference between a pro and a hobbiest photographer? " he looked DOWN at me and replied in almost a whisper, as if it were top sectret " a pro will keep less than 10% of what he shoots, a hobbiest keeps them all."

At the time i was 17 years old I did not realise the significance of this statement but over the years it has became more and more prevelent and has always almost haunted me. Do I count my total shoot images to ensure I keep less than 10%..NO..but after I do my first cut, second cut, edit then final cut...im always testing myself to see what % I do keep.. While not to satisfy the old man watching over me from somewhere today, but more as a guide as to how accurate I am performing when I pull the trigger. I like to assess myself in this matter.

The reason for my assesment is in my understanding there are two Schools of Photographers, one school of photographers know what they want, create and capture...the other school is the school of shoot and hope...the gaurdians of post production!!!.. While both can create fantastic images there are two very different mind sets..one of pre creative vision and one of post creativity..to have both is the key. So...back to my assessing of me...I assess my keep image volume because if i shoot for example a wedding and with 600 frames i keep 100 then for 500 frames I have not been thinking...while during moving events like dancing etc I may run a sequence of frames at high speed this maybe accounts of another 100 of the 600 said possible shots...so now I say for 400 frames was i guesing and hoping...the very thing I despise?...NO longer the case because after the first 3 weddings I ever photographed I realised that the point and shoot at everything and hope to catch is what the untrained, unqualified, and non pro photographers do....spending many many hours in post production. By putting the thinking head on I can reduce my shoot and strike rate to a 35%-40% keep rate.

Now, what does this mean for the client...in reality..nothing...this saves me time and makes my work more profitable....The only possible gain for the client is they get there images faster and the image contant is less random and more composed. Where possible, taking 2 seconds to think before shooting can save hours of trawling through hundreds of images containing silly errors and can save hours of photoshop time.

So other than the fact of a pro photographer making a living from photography and hopefully being qualified to some level or having a natural abillity I think the difference between a pro and hobby photographer is how your mind is thinking before you press the button or, not thinking. When filling your refridgerator counts on pressing the button at the right time it changes the thought pattern..if it doesn't then enjoy your hobby!!!

Welcome to the Blog of Gardner Hamilton (http://www.gardnerhamilton.com/) and Wedding Photography for Vina del mar and Santiago, Chile. (http://www.weddingphotochile.com/)

This blog is to share experiences and ideas, concepts and problems with wedding photography in Chile.

In my experience, Chile has some very capible photographers but they lack innovation in composition and a deep enough knowledge of post production (eg - Photoshop) to produce the high quality Fine Art style photography required for wedding clients.

In nearly all of the weddings I have photographed in Vina del Mar and in Santiago, local clients always require an album containing printed photographs. This is obviously the tradition in many countries but, after working in several northern hemisphere countries such as United States, Canada, Japan and many locaions in Europe I notice a trend change where 90 percent of clients now only request images on a digital format (DVD / CD).

The freedom of the digital image gives clients the availibility to email and print at their own control. The problem then begins with Watermarks!!! As a pro photographer for many years I realise the importance of a photographer protecting his copyright and his work. In my opinion this is for the commercial side of photography. Many of the photographers I have encountered in Chile do not even own their own copyright yet cover there images with a bold watermark stating protection. This as in other countries is a way to ensure clients have to return and pay for more images.

In my mind and looking to the future, I see this as the rope with which they hang themselves. I prefer to give the client disks of full size, copyright free images for them to do with as they please. This means I do not make resale on the images but for a wedding, seriously...how many clients come back year after year for prints....come on photographers.....cut your clients free...

My next BIG ISSUE with images in Chile is print quality. Chile has one pro lab and to be honest it has failed me twice already. While they have state of the art equipment...they pay no attention to paper humidity levels and ink tempratures so all their fancy gadgets become useless. The turn out the same quality upto 20"x16" as the regular Kodak store in the street. For high quality large prints I still use the USA.

What struck me the most when arriving to Chile 18 months ago was the huge demand for informal wedding photography, the opposite of the northern Americas where the formal pose and fine art portrait is a key element of the event. Just last week i was shooting for a couple from Santiago who had a fantastic wedding event at Sporting Club Valparaiso http://www.sporting.cl/ A bueatiful Venue and a great event hosted by http://www.casaeventos.cl/ . This particular client wanted only informal photos, which turned out to be great as they were all party animals and were dancing crazy all night. A far change from the very rigid and formal events timed to the second in other parts of the world. Using some super wide angle lenses (10mm) my assistant, Mauricio, and I captured some very different images using monopods to shoot from different perspectives and give alternative views of the event..A SUCCESS !

Next week I am working with a Canadain couple who tie the knot on a roof top at midnight in Santiago...i will let you know how that goes.
