As with every passing wedding photography season, here in Chile highlighted a few more recurring factors that I feel effect the way in which I must approach the days photography, so, not to get everyone to conform with what the photographer wants this is more of a few pointers to consider that will not only make the photography better for me, but will ultimately make the resulting photographs better for you .
Everything below are details that with a little advance timing, any bride or groom can ensure do or don't occur on their special day.
1. Daylight !
Being in such a sun drenched part of the world is truly a gift and it is wise to consider this when planning the TIME of your ceremony. Consider that the midday sun here in South America with fry your guests and have your makeup dripping onto your shoes within minutes. Consider that your Church ceremony may be indoors and in the shade but after the church is the prime time for creating the formal portraits of the new couple and in this very strong overhead sunlight you are not maximizing on what nature has to offer. Civil outdoor ceremonies also, while outdoor and in shade are very nice, but if you are in the shade and all around is on fire your eyes will be half closed through the entire event.
So...What then?...the answer is time your ceremony to finish leaving about 90-120 minutes of daylight. This gives time to get to a secluded location near by (previously scouted by me of course) and gives enough time to shoot without rushing. the light in the last 90mins of the days sun creates the most complimentary lighting. The saddest thing I see in wedding photography in Chile is the beautiful brides wonderful white dress and the strong light will not permit the camera from capturing the little details that make the dress so special and unique.
2. Event Punctuality !
Like most things in Chile even weddings can run a little late, which is all fine and half expected. The ultimate price to pay for a late arrival at the church or civil wedding ceremony is that you have then caused a reduction in the amount of time after the ceremony to shoot in natural light. Many times brides and groom will say to me during preparation that "hey ifs were 20 minutes late everyone will wait" Yes I reply, everyone except the SUN !
3. Photos, Video or Both !
Something I think every couple should consider for after their wedding day is, what will be the most treasured memory?, what will be the most important thing after the wedding? Photos or Video. This is information I feel it is important to inform the photographers and video people about to ensure the photographers and Videographers ensure the one deemed preferential has priority to capture the moment. I have no problem stepping to the side to allow the video crew the prime shot if the bride and groom say it is so. All good professional Photographers and Videographers will conform to this methodology. If they don't look elsewhere.
4. Plastic Bags !
The throwing of the flower petals as the bride and groom leave the church is a great moment , full of fun,
smiles emotions, color laughter and PLASTIC BAGS !! WHAT? Yes ! Many brides plan so many amazing a beautiful details into their wedding day then the guests show up throwing the petals from Jumbo, Lider, Easy, Cruz Verde etc etc bags Something that no one notices on the day, but believe me the camera never lies. I have Photoshopped every major chain and department store name in Chile from the bags in the hands of guests throughout 2009. I don't thing Brides can cover every angle but at the few weddings where I have seen the guests with little baskets it makes a huge difference to the final images and such an important moment.
5. The Cake !
This one is very simple. Usually the bride and groom don't actually select the location where there cake will be placed. If this were the case I am sure I would not be making this No5 Post "The Cake"
This one is super simple and makes a HUGE difference to another super important photo of the day.
I'm many cases the cake is delivered to the event centre and constructed on site by either the cake company or the event centre people. Either way the event centre seem to be the one responsible for the position within the room that the cake is placed. Usually they repeat the same location for every event but this is not to say its the BEST location. Against a brick wall or a big reflective window with fingerprints all over it, next to a steel lighting rig for the DJ or beside the drainage pipe or cables coming from the upper floor.
My advice is get the cake positioned somewhere NICE, insist or, get them to put a nice curtain or dark material behind it. this makes the cake color and the color of the brides dress really pop and eliminates other distractions in the background of this prim importance photo of the day
6. First Dance
During the First Dance (and the cake cut for that matter) Tell your Lighting people No Colored Spot Lights on the Bride and Groom. Sometimes the best photos can be ruined because the bride has a half blue and half green face while the groom has a big red spot on the ass of his pants. This is a common reason for many first dance photos ending up in Back and White. not through artistic photography composition but from the need to supply the photo regardless
7. Chronology
When planning the timeline of your day most people make the mistake of planning it then telling all the service providers after the fact. Sure this worked as any good wedding service provider in Chile should flex to suit your needs, BUT, taking the time to meet each of your service providers with your chronology sheet will enable you to consider all the angles. Such is the way with my service, I really have to pencil in the timeline to cover preparation, informal, formal, portraiture, artistic, photojournalistic, and details photos.
Ensuring the right time to photograph the bride and groom, and the group photos is paramount as alcohol begins to play a factor on skin color and organisation issues. A list of the groups you wish to have photographed is the perfect way to go as i can produce it in a very fun and organised fashion In short...the better the plan we have, the better the results and you have more time to dance and eat cake !
8. The Rings
Here's a little thing that many photographers never seem to mention to their clients and its such an important little detail.. Very simple. Dues to the nature of left and right facing each other become opposites, during the ring exchange it becomes tricky to gt the perfect angles to capture the hands crossing over and exchanging the BLING so,i always tell the couples that when placing the ring on your partners finger, hold the ring between your thumb and forefinger only and slide the ring onto the others finger from below their hand (ie: your hand passes below the others), this giving a clear view from headlight of the event taking place. Works like a charm !
9. Water and Sitting
Bride and Groom, you will be on your feet most of the day and into the night. During your preparation before going to the ceremony, this is when you get most nervous, pulse and heart rates flutter and you are highly likely to become unknowing to you, dehydrated. always have water with you..drink often but not lots or you will need to pee during the ceremony, then you will get all in a fluster. Sipping water throughout the preparation will not only keep you hydrated, it will clear your eyes and help show a clearer shite and more pure eye color in the photographs, it will also keep your body temperature more regulated so you wont sweat, most important for brides makeup and finally it keeps a nice colour in the skin making photos even better. Last but not least it should stop your fainting at the alter !!
Now to sitting down....i always see brides and groom pacing the floor while on the photo during preparation...or walking around the room, or just standing between the endless number of unused comfortable chairs and couches around. TAKE A SEAT...you're going to be on your feet for at least 8 hours..if you don't have to be standing. DON'T !!! take it from me as I am on my feet even when your sitting !!
10. Smoke Machines and Laser Lights
Don't you love a touch of the old smoke machine when the party starts?....The laser lights start cutting through it like something from a Sci-Fi movie. Sure its great but warn your Light people, or DJ that focusing cameras on moving people with smoke and laser lights is almost impossible and there can be a high percentage of images ruined as the light and smoke confuse the cameras sensors. If both are kept to a Short burst now and again it creates amazing photos but too much and the photographer has to wait 15 minutes for the smoke to clear possibly missing great photo opportunities on the dance floor.

ESPAÑOL
Como pasa en cada temporada de fotografías de bodas, asuntos nuevos y antiguos siempre se destacan y algunos factores recurrentes afectan la forma en que debo enfrentarme al día de la fotografía. Sin intentar que todos se adapten a lo que el fotógrafo necesita, lo siguiente son algunos consejos que no sólo conseguirán la fotografía más fácil para mí pero también que finalmente seas tú quien obtenga un mejor resultado en sus imagenes.
Todo lo que viene a continuación son detalles que con un poco de tiempo, cualquier novia(o) podrá tomar medidas y evitar que ocurra en su dia especial.
1. Luz de día
Estamos en una parte del mundo donde el sol es realmente un regalo y es sabio considerar esto al momento de planear la hora de tu ceremonia. Considera que el sol de mediodía en Sudamérica freirá a tus invitados y hará que tu maquillaje gotée a los zapatos en un par de minutos.
Considera que tu ceremonia en la iglesia se realice puertas adentro y bajo sombra pero después de la iglesia es la hora principal para crear los retratos formales de la nueva pareja y bajo estos fuertes rayos de luz sobre nuestras cabezas no se maximiza lo que la naturaleza nos ofrece. Las ceremonias civiles realizadas en el exterior, mientras sean bajo la sombra son muy hermosas,,pero si estás a la sombra y todo a tu alrededor esta sobreiluminado tus ojos estarán mitad cerrados durante todo el evento.
¿Entonces? ¿cuál es la solución? ...la respuesta es planear tu ceremonia para que termine cuando queden unos 90-120 minutos de luz solar. Esto da tiempo suficiente para ubicar un lugar aislado que quede cerca (previamente explorado por mí, obviamente) y nos dé tiempo suficiente para fotografiar sin apresurarse.
La iluminación en los últimos 90 minutos de luz solar crea una de las mejores luces complementarias.
Lo mas triste que he visto en la fotografía de matrimonios chilenos es ver que hermosas novias con lindos vestidos blancos y por mal manejo de esta luz no se le permitió capturar esos pequeños detalles que hacen el vestido tan especial y único.
2. Puntualidad en el Evento
Como la mayoría de las cosas en Chile incluso los matrimonios pueden atrasarse, lo cual está bien e incluso se espera que sea así. Pero, el precio a pagar por llegar tarde a la iglesia o al registro civil es una reducción en el tiempo que se dispone después de la ceremonia para sacar fotos con luz natural. Muchas veces las novias y los novios me dicen durante la preparación de la ceremonia que si llegan 20 minutos atrasados todos los invitados van a esperar de igual forma, yo les contesto que: “_ Sí, todos excepto el sol !_”
3. Fotos, Video o Ambos
Algo que creo que la pareja debería considerar es que, después de sus bodas: ¿cuál va a ser el recuerdo mas preciado?
¿Que va a ser mas importante después de la boda? Fotos o Video. Creo que es importante dar a conocer esta información a los fotógrafos y al personal del video, para que se considere cual tiene mayor prioridad para capturar el momento.
No tengo ningún problema en hacerme a un lado para que el personal que grabe el video tenga la toma perfecta, si eso es lo que la novia y el novio desean.
Todo buen fotógrafo o camarógrafo seguirá esta metodología.
4. Bolsas Plásticas
El tirar pétalos de flores a los novios mientras salen de la iglesia, es un gran momento, lleno de diversión y romantisismo.
Sonrisas, emociones, risas de color y BOLSAS PLASTICAS!!! ¿Qué? Sí! Muchas novias planean una boda con detalles sorprendentes y hermosos, para que después los invitados terminen tirando pétalos desde bolsas plásticas de Jumbo, Lider, Easy, Cruz Verde, etc etc. Esto es algo que nadie se fija ese día pero créanme la cámara nunca miente. He “fotoshopeado” las bolsas que sostienen los invitados de todas las grandes tiendas en Chile!.
No creo que las novias puedan cubrir todos los ángulos, pero en algunas ocasiones he visto los invitados llevar pequeños canastos, lo cual crea una gran diferencia en las imágenes finales y los momentos importantes.
5. La Torta
Este tip es muy simple. Usualmente la novia y el novio no eligen el lugar donde se pondrá la torta de novios. Si este fuera el caso no haría el post nº 5 “ la torta”
Este es súper simple y hace una GRAN diferencia en esta otra importantísima foto del día.
Yo sé que la torta es entregada al centro de eventos y el lugar donde se exhibe está determinado por las personas que trabajan en el centro de eventos
Entonces el centro de eventos es responsable por el lugar de la torta dentro del lugar donde se desarrolla la fiesta. Generalmente repiten la posición en cada evento, pero esto no quiere decir que sea el mejor lugar. Frente a una pared de ladrillos, al lado de un gran ventanal con huellas dactilares por todos lados, al lado de una plataforma para un foco luminoso de acero para el DJ o al lado de una tubería de drenaje/ cables.
Mi consejo es que pongan la torta en un lugar “bonito”, o tratar de conseguir una cortina ojala oscura detrás de la torta. Esto hace que se destaque el color de la torta, el vestido de la novia, y más aún, elimina las distracciones del fondo.
6. Baile de novios
Durante el baile de los novios, díle a quienes controlan la iluminación que no pongan luces de colores sobre los novios. A veces las mejores fotografías se pueden ver arruinadas porque la novia tiene su cara mitad azul y mitad verde, mientras el novio tiene una luz roja en la parte trasera de sus pantalones
Esta es una de las principales razones de por qué las fotos del primer baile de novios termina en blanco y negro. No porque sea una fotografía “artística”! Si no por la necesidad de entregar esta foto tan especial.
7. Cronología
Cuando planeas la línea de tiempo en tu día, la mayoría de las personas comete el error de planearla y finalmente informar a todos los proveedores de servicios. Seguramente esto funcionó cuando cualquier buen proveedor de servicios para matrimonios en Chile debió ser flexible a sus necesidades, PERO, si te tomas el tiempo de reunirte con cada uno de ellos con la cronología en mano te permitirá ver todo los ángulos de tu boda. Así es mi servicio, siempre debo anotar la cronología de la boda para cubrir: preparación de la novia, fotos formales e informales, retratos, fotografías artísticas, fotos periodísticas y de los detalles.
Es de suma importancia garantizar el momento adecuado para tomar las fotos de los novios, sin olvidar las fotos de grupo, familia, amigos, esto se torna complicado cuando el alcohol empieza a ser un factor en el color de piel, y en la organización de las fotografías.
Una lista con los grupos que deseas fotografiar ayudaría a que esto sea mas expedito y fácil, así nos aseguramos de tener un mejor resultado y que tu tengas mas tiempo para bailar y comer torta
8. Los Anillos
Aquí hay algo que la mayoría de los fotógrafos parece olvidar de mencionar a sus clientes y es un pequeño GRAN detalle y tan importante… Muy sencillo: durante el intercambio del anillo se hace difícil conseguir los ángulos perfectos para capturar las manos cruzandose e intercambiando anillos, yo siempre les digo a las parejas que al colocar el anillo en el dedo de su novio(a), sujete el anillo sólo entre el pulgar y el índice y deslice el anillo en el dedo por debajo de la mano de su novia(o) (es decir: la mano pasa por debajo de los otras), así estarás dando una visión clara y abierta del evento que se lleva a cabo. Funciona mágicamente!
9. Agua y Asiento
Novia y novio, ustedes estarán de pié la mayor parte del tiempo, día y noche. Durante tu preparación antes de ir a la ceremonia, es aquí donde estás mas nerviosa(o), el pulso y el corazón laten por mil y sin que lo notes te vas deshidratando, siempre ten agua a mano, bébe a menudo agua pero sin exagerar ya que en plena ceremonia podrías sentir ganas de ir al baño. Bebiendo agua a lo largo de la preparación no solo aseguras que te hidrates correctamente sino que mantiene tus ojos despejados ayudando a mostrar una mirada mas clara para la fotografía y mantendrás la temperatura corporal evitando el sudor y a la vez que se corra el maquillaje, manteniendo un buen tono de color en la piel para que la toma de fotos sea la mejor. Por último pero no menos importante evita que te desmayes frente al altar.
Ahora a sentarse… siempre veo a las novias y novios pasear y darse vueltas por la habitación mientras tomo las fotografías de preparación también veo que se sientan en una variedad de sillas o sillones incómodos. Toma asiento… estarás parada(o) durante mas de 8 horas. Si tú no debes estar de pié entonces NO lo estés!, te lo aconsejo yo! que estaré de pié incluso mientras tu te sientas.
10. Maquinas de Humo y luces láser
¿Quién no ama el efecto de humo de una maquina cuando la fiesta comienza?... las luces láser empiezan a atravesarlo como si fuera una película de ciencia ficción.
Claro que es grandioso, pero advierte a tus operadores de iluminación o DJ que es casi imposible que las cámaras puedan enfocar gente en movimiento con humo y luces láser, que cambian a cada segundo. Se arruina un alto porcentaje de imágenes porque el sensor de la cámara se confunde entre luz y humo.
Si ambos efectos (luces y humo) se mantienen por un periodo corto y de vez en cuando, pueden ayudar a crear fotos increíbles pero cuando es mucho, el fotografo tendrá que esperar 15 minutos para que el humo se disípe y así poder volver a fotografiar, posiblemente perdiendo la oportunidad de capturar excelentes imágenes en la pista de baile.
